A Charming Cape Cod Mudroom and Powder Room Project Reveal
I’m so excited to share this great little space with you. This home renovation brought to light, functionality, and style to a very small space. This charming Cape Cod-style home is situated in a quiet neighborhood outside of Philadelphia and is one of those houses where nobody comes to the front door. The family, as well as guests, always use the side laundry room entrance off the driveway and garage, but it felt like… walking into a laundry room. Because they use it for their family with young kids as well as welcoming guests they wanted to make it feel a little more inviting and open all while being durable and functional for everyday use.
Mudroom Remodel
In this mudroom renovation, we decided to amp up the textural elements and create lots of visual punch in a small space with the addition of varying molding and trim work throughout. The board and batten on the wall brings a nice texture that ties the outside with the inside and the beadboard paneling on the ceiling gives even more dimension and interest.
Slate floors were laid in a herringbone pattern to draw people in as they came through the door and a little bench and hooks are available in the built-in storage cubbies right as you walk in. Matte black hardware brings in some contrast, and brass lighting and accents add warmth. A beautiful indoor-outdoor rug brings in softness and a touch of pattern to the room. And wicker baskets soften the space more and give it some natural texture.
The space was opened up to the rest of the home and the entryway was enlarged by removing a small coat closet. The laundry was moved to the basement and added functional cubbies with storage for off-season items up top as well as quick storage for shoes and other items. A new wood door added even more warmth and allowed for all the natural light to flow through the space and into the rest of the home.
Powder Room
The powder room in the space is large and is right off the mudroom. We wanted this space to have its own personality, so we brought the same board and batten into the bathroom, but painted it a dark green/blue color and used it as wainscoting instead of going all the way up to the ceiling like it did in the mudroom. On the top third, we used a graphic floral wallpaper to keep the space feeling light and bright and give a touch of the movement against all the straight lines.
Warmth is brought in with the wood vanity and brass accents. And the matte black on the lighting ties in with the mudroom hardware. A cool gunmetal faucet gives a touch more dimension and the space feels layered and fresh.
Now this space that used to be a basic laundry room and powder room is now a welcoming and functional entry for the family as well as friends and visitors. There is lots of storage and functionality all wrapped up with lots of interesting design details to bring it to life.
